Wild Seed
Wow. The last paragraph made me emotional, because I felt like I was exiting a chapter of my life that was so eventful and moving. It was a sort of graduation. This was the first science fiction novel I’ve ever read and I don’t know how any can come after it. Usually I prefer to read non-fiction because I’ve always wanted straight forward social commentary, but now I understand the importance of the imagination in the social consciousness. Butler pushes and pushes my limits of what could be. She plays with race and gender and sexuality and age and ability in ways that I am actually able to understand and feel comfortable with and love.
